Tony Doom and Aaron Olson Recognized by DFL Senate District 21
Tony Doom, Marshall , MN , is the 2009 recipient of the Bob Starr Award. The award is presented by DFL Senate District 21annually to a Democrat who has demonstrated notable contributions to the Senate District. Doom has been active in the District since 1968, attending his first Precinct Caucus at that time. He has served as a volunteer on numerous campaigns including that of former Congressman Bob Bergland, and former Minnesota State Senators Wayne Olhoft and Gary DeCramer. Doom has been a driving force and an active participant in the Lyon County DFL for over thirty years. He served as treasurer for many years and has chaired numerous committees. He has consistently attended state conventions as a delegate and alternate. In addition, Doom has strongly supported other district activities and been an important liaison between local and state DFL organizations. He is the current Chair of DFL Senate District 21 and has served in this position since 2003.
DFL Senate District also presents the Rising Star Award to a young DFL participant who has made significant contributions to the party. This year’s recipient is Arron Olson, a student at Southwest Minnesota State University . Olson worked for the Obama and Franken campaigns as well as the Campus Democrats. He was instrumental in making SMSU number one in new voter registrations among the more than thirty Minnesota state colleges. He established a Facebook network of university Democrats which sets a framework for future campaigns and activities on campus. Olson was also instrumental in assisting with the 2009 Senate recount.
The Bob Starr and Rising Starr awards are presented each year at the DFL Senate District Fundraiser held in April. Nominations for the 2010 award may be sent to cottonwoodfl@yahoo.com.
